Why did you decide to get sober, or what turn of events lead you to Clear Behavioral Health?

I got sober because I wanted a different life than the one I had and I knew I was suffering because of alcohol and that only sobriety would give me the life I wanted. It was an easy choice: suffer or don’t. I came to Clear because I wanted the emotional tools to keep me physically sober.

How has your perspective on life changed since beginning recovery?

My perspective on life has changed in that I am able to take responsibility for my actions now and to see things from other people’s’ perspectives. I no longer look to blame others or sit in frustration, but rather look for solutions when I am faced with problems or adversity.

What are you looking forward to in the future?

I am looking forward to gaining more knowledge and wisdom about life and about the many gray areas that exist; everything was so black and white for me when I was drinking. I’m now able to see so many new things and perspectives than I ever thought possible and life is now a big classroom, and I’m finally in a position to learn.

What have you learned about yourself in recovery?

I learned that I was an angry bitter person and a major introvert that was only an extrovert due to alcohol.

If you could reach out to someone new in recovery, what advice would you give to them?

I would tell a new person in recovery that there is no one solution that works for everyone. In my experience, it has required multiple facets: an exercise program, a diet, a new circle of friends, definitely new hobbies and endeavors, new dreams, reading, a support group, therapy, meditation, and writing. Everything has to change and it won’t happen over night, but when it does, it’s amazing, and you’ll never enjoy your old life again once your new setup trumps it.
