Going to the gym is one way to get fit and be healthier but after a while it can lose its luster. Exercising outside in the great outdoors is sometimes called green exercise. According to a 2013 study by Extreme Physiology and Medicine green exercise may have many health benefits over exercising indoors. Some of these benefits are improved mood, self-esteem, and a significant reduction in stress levels. There are many great ways of getting in shape and being active all the while enjoying the outdoors in the South Bay Area. The cold and dreary weather of winter is nearly over.  Spring is coming and with it a beautiful time to be outside and alive. There is no reason not to enjoy the outdoors and get in shape at the same time. Five great activities to do in the South Bay Area involve hiking, bike riding, outdoor yoga, paddle boarding, and surfing.

Hiking is a fantastic way to enjoy the nature of the South Bay while simultaneously developing a healthier lifestyle. It is a great and free activity except for the occasional parking charge. There are many different trails and parks within and around the South Bay Area that allow for a beautiful and serene urban escape.  Three of the greatest trails in the South Bay Area are the Palos Verdes Estates Shoreline Preserve, Abalone Cove, and Del Cerro Park.

Bike riding is the second way of getting in shape and developing a healthier lifestyle. The Marvin Braude Bike Trail more famously known as The Strand starts under the beautiful cliffsides and runs 22 miles from Torrance to Santa Monica. It is a great way to get exercise while experiencing the pleasantries and personalities of the beach towns that exist along the trail. Marina Bike Rentals located at 505 N Harbor Drive provides a great and affordable place to rent bikes for the trail.

Paddle Boarding is quite a fun outdoor exercise that almost anyone can do. There are many -great places to rent paddle boards along the South Bay Area. Tarsan Stand-Up Paddle Boarding offers rentals and lessons. They are located at 831 N Harbor Dr near the Redondo Beach Marina. One of the best areas for paddle boarding is the Marina. It is a fantastic area to go as its placid waters provide for perfect paddle boarding.

Outdoor yoga combines the serenity of yoga with the beauty of the outdoors. There are many studios in Manhattan Beach that provide indoors as well as outdoor classes. The Yoga Loft located at 1112 Ocean Dr in Manhattan Beach is a great studio that offers classes for those eager to delve into yoga and although it is indoors, it provides a great place to learn yoga for the outdoors.

Manhattan Beach, Torrance Beach, and Redondo Beach are great beaches in the South Bay that provide great water and waves for those who already know how and those who are learning how to surf.
