What Is Abuse and Trauma?
Abuse and trauma come in many different forms. No two cases are ever exactly the same. Abuse can be sexual, physical, emotional, and mental. It can also be as a result of neglect, such as child neglect or abandonment. Often, it is a combination of these things. Abuse can happen as an isolated incident or as a recurring pattern over long periods of time.
Trauma is often a direct result of abuse, but it can also happen on its own. It can happen to anyone at any time. Events like death, natural disasters, robbery, accidents, sexual harassment, and illness can all cause traumas. People in certain career fields – like the military and first responders – are also at a high risk of experiencing job related trauma.
People who have survived abuse or trauma sometimes have difficulty recognizing the second and third order effects of what they have gone through. They don’t always recognize that they need help. Sometimes they feel that they are not worthy of receiving it.
If this sounds like someone you know, give us a call. At Clear Recovery Center, we’re specialists in teaching victims how to grow past their trauma and move forward.
How We Treat the Lasting Effects of Abuse and Trauma
There’s no “proper” or “normal” way for a person to deal with abuse and traumatic events. At Clear Recovery Center, we know that each case is different. We understand that everyone copes in different ways. That’s why use an individualized approach when developing a treatment plan.
We offer our clients a wide variety of resources, including many types of therapy and counseling. Survivors of abuse and trauma also tend to have other mental health disorders – including addiction – so we take a comprehensive approach to healing. We treat the whole person, not just the diagnosis. Some tools we use include:
-Couples and family therapy
-Substance abuse counseling
-Substance abuse support groups
Our approach focuses on a guided exploration of the abuse or traumatic event. We work with patients to build an understanding of the emotional wounds, destructive behaviors, and psychological damage caused by trauma. We’ll help find healthy ways to cope and move forward, including long-term plans for managing emotional stress after a patient leaves our treatment center.

How Abuse and Trauma Affects Sufferers
Abuse and trauma create high levels of fear and stress. They trigger the body to produce increased levels of these hormones, sending it into “survival” mode. Repeated exposure to high levels of these hormones can cause the brain to change the way it functions. For example, studies have shown that high levels of stress in children – such as in child abuse cases – stunts brain growth and development. In adults, this can result in mental health disorders.
There are other effects as well. In the months and even years following abuse or trauma, people often experience intense feelings of fear, guilt, hopelessness, shame, self-blame, and irritability. Nightmares, insomnia, panic attacks, and trouble concentrating are also very common.
Over a long period of time, these symptoms can evolve into paranoia, anxiety and depression disorders, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Survivors often struggle with multiple symptoms and mental health issues as a result of what they’ve been through. Many are reluctant or unable to get help and turn to drugs and alcohol for relief from constant pain and fear.
When a person experiences mental health disorders and addiction, they are said to have “co-occurring” disorders. At Clear Recovery Center, we are experts at treating co-occurring disorders. Our holistic approach to healing allows us to treat the person, not just one aspect of their pain. Contact us today to see how we can help.
WHAT WE TREAT
Co-occuring Addiction and Mental Health Issues
Substance use disorders can coincide with mental health or even multiple issues at once. That includes mood, developmental, eating, and behavioral disorders. Clear Recovery Center is equipped to handle a wide variety of co-occurring disorders.
Signs That You Are Still Suffering from Past Abuse and Trauma
Trauma and abuse leave lasting scars. They can be both physical and psychological, and some are harder to recognize than others. Symptoms like flashbacks, constant worry, fear, low self-esteem, anxiety, paranoia, insomnia, and addiction are all indicators of psychological damage resulting from trauma and abuse.
Survivors also often report feeling like they can’t move on with their lives, or like they deserved what happened to them. Many also feel guilty for surviving the event, especially when they know someone else who did not.
These symptoms and feelings can last for years. But nobody has to live this way. Past trauma does not own a person’s future.
